Yes, you read that right. It’s sad, but it is likely that Smokin’ Guns will have to change, not only its site, but its name too!
Time is short since “our devs” are working hard in site migration.
This is an urgent call for proposals about a new, pertinent, sexy name for our beloved game.

…perhaps would not be bad a voting, but after a short (but important) pre-selection from the administrators, – and after the criteria such as search-engines-usability, brand recognition, recollection and so on….
…as a funny bird i find now “Smoking Fun” very nice 🙂
…but it can come to misinterpretations, because concerned,
not smoking parents… …maybe adjust to: “Deadly Smoking Fun” 😀

Just a piece of boring advice here.
2 things to keep in mind:
– Stay as close to the original name as you can (exception: if you have a new game coming out, like a new version, and your willing to promote it on the WWW. Takes a lot of time, a lot of energy and is almost not rewarding since SG is infact a game with a small public, especialy new public. My opinion: don’t do it; so no ‘ PengPeng, Yankee Bayonet, LethalLethal, HighNoon, just to name a few)
-second: make that the name reflects where it’s all about: guns, western, maybe! some history. So the name could be (keeping the first rule in mind): Western Guns, Western Shooter, Wild West Guns, Cowboy Guns, Smoking Colts, Saloon Guns and so on. Why?
Any kid looking for a new game will google it with some word to describe it, like “Free game shooter western”. That’s the crucial point where this game has to be the number one in the list of google results. So the game has to be something like ‘Free Western Shooter”…And more sexy ofcourse. Drop the Free. Find a way around the ‘Shooter…’

@zapa: I’m not sure you are right when you say “Stay as close to the original name as you can”, there’s the risk that searching Google with a misspelled name, you get a lot of pages-not-found linked to old site. But I have to trust your experience, talking about games, and games’ promotion 😉
BTW: Lethal Lethal, was not a proposal, but just a joke (not intended to be published here) about the owner of the now defunct site.
Another thought: to get a good position in Google searches like “Free game Western shooter” , is not necessary to name the game like that. Also when the game were named “Spaketti”, it’s enough if the phrase “Free game Western shooter” is made explicit in the site, so that everyone that publishes a review/post/screenshot/video about the game cites it as “Spaketti, the free game Western shooter”.
A last thing: introducing an intentional typo in the name could easier a Google search. If I have to search “Spaghetti” (121.000.000 findings) it’s unlikely I get to the game site at the first try, but if I have to search “Spaketti” (22.200 findings) I’ll probably get it.

I don’t find it confortable to use a trademarked name we don’t own, but it still give us the chance to have SG 1.1 out in few days/weeks.
We will probably use sourceforge to host the website.

Let me get into this debate. It’s really sad to hear that and I think I would be never able to remove the current name from my memory.

– Smokinguns (let’s just remove the ‘)
– Lawmens (in reference of the well known western shooter created by LucasArt named Outlaws)
– Winnie the gun 😀

– Guns’ Trilogy: Colt, Shotgun and Dynamite
I really like the ideas of Smokin’ Spaghetti, it really fits with the game. Anyhow, I still prefer the original title of the game, there’s no way to take it back? Is this just a temporary problem?
Maybe the most simple version:
“Smokin’ Guns” is a trademark registered, but SMOKING GUNS not.

Not because I’m Italian, but I think that the name should not only suggest the idea of Old/Wild West, but also recall Spaghetti Westerns, that were the original source of inspirations for the early mappers/modelers and for SG musics.
So, IMO, in the first we have to keep in mind Sergio Leone’s movies.

But I don’t understand why we will change of name?
I don’t know all details, but seems that “the owner” of the old site gave up. He will not contribute any more to the site and to the game.
And since “Smokin’ Guns” is a trademark registered by him, it’s likely that he won’t let the group of developers that are trying to save the game use it.
I can’t be more explicit, also because I’ve only second hand news.
I think we could make some brain storming. Lets write all of our idea.
