SG on Linux

Hi All,

Anyone using Linux to run SG? I know Biondo does.
I’ll try running SG on my other, damaged Vista-computer (vista damaged my Nvidia driver,NVidia nvlddmkm. Google it, you will see Nvidia ignores people with that problem. The bug is up and running for more then two years, and not Vista and not Nvidia did anything to help the problem. There is still no solution so far…) So I try running it in Linux, since i tested the graphic card there and it works properly.

I’ll run it from an Ubuntu USB-stick (you can run Linux from a stick, instead of installing it over Windows. Now I open my brand new SG-folder I’ve just downloaded. I’ll try to run it in Ubuntu but nothing happens. I think I have to open the .x86 file, but with what? I believe there is no  program assigned to open a .x86 file…Can anyone help me out here? Thanks!

    Thank you, dansh!

To compile is better to use the stable distribution debian (ubuntu 10.04, debian squeeze). I would recommend Ubuntu 10.04.
Open a terminal and type the following commands(for Ubuntu):

    cd /tmp

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get install subversion build-essential bison byacc libsdl1.2-dev libopenal-dev

    svn co https://smokinguns.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/smokinguns/branches/1.1-release/ smokinguns

    cd smokinguns

    make

This will create a folder “build”, which will be your compiled files.

Zapata, another thing: Are you able to launch smokinguns.i386 from a terminal? When you open a program via a terminal, you get a feedback about what’s not working.

    1– Open a terminal
2– Go to the directory where smokinguns.i386 is (using the command cd)
    3– Type “./smokinguns.i386”

But if you’ve never used the terminal, probably better if you forget what I said 😉

I’ll try it and come back to you. Tnx dansh, but so far I have no clue what you talk about 🙂

  5. Biondo says:

@Zapata: you asked “I think I have to open the .x86[or .i386] file, but with what?”.

Answer: as long as the file is executable (= has execute permissions), just double click on it and this will open SG.

  6. Biondo says:

dansh, Zapata, I have to say that compiling SG is not so easy (I wasn’t able to do it).

  7. dansh says:

I noticed that at different dist. Linux game runs differently. Try to compile the files you in his system.

  8. Biondo says:

You should have another file called smokinguns.i386 (“i” not “x”). This is the file that works for me (in Linux). Be sure that whichever file you open (.x86 or .i386) it has execution permission
Don’t know which desktop environment you are using, but probably you have to right click on it and adjust its “properties”. Alternatively change file permissions typing in terminal: “chmod 755 smokinguns.i386” [without quotes].
