You click, you fly…

Ever played SG in low gravity mode?

About 2 years ago there was a server named “Team [BACON]’s Secret Moon Base” –or something like that– with a gravity value of 100 (default is 900). Just a jump and you were able to fly. It was fun, every now and then, to shoot other players from the sky or take them down from below.

I thought it would be nice if sometimes we could play our weekly deathmatch (or TDM) in a server like that.
I also tried experimenting to put online a low-g server from my home PC, and yesterday night I played against Mope in Alamo … his ping was very high, 200 or more, but mine was OK (zero) πŸ™‚

The experiment was fun, but, I don’t know why, I can’t manage to start a server that lasts more than 1 game. When the game ends all players get disconnected. Jippi, maybe you can help me, or eventually you can resuscitate your server once a week.

What do you think?

I try it, if you help me a littlebit Biondo. I start to find the best moments. This is the first step. Biondo, could you suggest a software? I remember your great video.

    • Biondo says:

Sape, I used Cinelerra (a free software that works in Linux) but it is sooo difficult to use that if had to teach you I’d have to spend 10 more time than making the video by myself πŸ˜€

No, you live in a Windows world, where probably you can find a wider choice of simple video-editing software. I suggest you to ask to Mope (I think he is an expert in video production).

  2. SAPE says:

Very nice demo. It was a fun game.
Anyway, I have an Idea: Could we make a promotion video. It would based on our demos. A best of LAMEs, maybe. πŸ™‚
I can’t make a video. But I can watch the demo. and select the best moments of all lames. What is your opinion?
    I see a good video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jlr3-x0_Dw

    • Biondo says:

The idea is good, though I feel that there are still so many SG videos around, that it would be difficult to create something new and not boring.

Talking about me, I have to say that making a good video is time consuming, and I don’t have so much time in this period.
Of course, if someone else would like to produce such a video, he is welcome, just he should avoid scenes from low-g server, because of the many well known problems it has and because it’s quite rarely online.

  3. Biondo says:

Well, this is the demo: low-g.dm_68 (Right click and –> “Save file as …”).

Of course I had a great advantage: ping. Fun game, sorry that not all Lames could join πŸ™

    ——————————-

    TO PLAY THE DEMO:

put the file in your game’s demo directory. The location depends on the operating system you are using:

Linux: the file should go into ~/.smokinguns/smokinguns/demos/
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/SmokinGuns/smokinguns/demos/
Windows: either %APPDATA%\Smokin’ Guns\smokinguns\demos\ (use “Run” and copy it in) or C:\Program Files\Smokin’ Guns\smokinguns\demos\ (installation directory)
Under Windows XP the former expands to \Documents and settings\username\Application data\Smokin’ Guns\smokinguns\demos\
under Windows Vista or Windows 7, the former expands to \Users\username\Appdata\Roaming\Smokin’ Guns\smokinguns\demos\)

WARNING: If you are using Smokin’Guns v1.0 on Linux, ensure the filename is all lower-case or the client may not be able to open the file!
Finally start Smokin’ Guns, open the console and type \demo FILENAME where FILENAME is the name of the downloaded demo you want to review. Alternatively, you can choose Demos from the main game menu to get graphical listing of all available files.

[Thanks Doc for clear explanations: http://bb.game-host.org/demos/ ]

  4. SAPE says:

Maybe I late, but I will be there at least 21:15.

  5. JesseJames says:

Yes yes he is dancing with his girlfriend :). But he is not a pro πŸ˜‰

    • ZaPaTa says:

      Couldn’t make it,
sorry guys. Next time. But i’ll watch the movie for sure :D.
Yes, recently took some dance lessons to please my girlfriend, somehow i think that was a Lame idea πŸ™‚ (especially when I can’t test the low G server for once :D)

      • Biondo says:

Zapata, tell your girlfriend that you’ll make practice in Tijuana. There’s a nice gramophone there, airing danceable music! πŸ˜›

        • ZaPaTa says:

Line dancing isn’t really her thing πŸ˜€
But true, I loooove that song on the vinyl πŸ™‚

  6. JesseJames says:

Ok have fun, I will try it again, and ZaPaTa will try it at 21:30 after his dance lessons. πŸ™‚ Cross your fingers!

  7. GREYMAN says:

Ok 21:00! I will be there.

  8. SAPE says:

I will be there cowboys. Biondo, will you record it?

  9. Mope says:

No problem, your lab rat will be ready at 21:00 for your evil experiments.

  10. Mope says:

    Challenge accepted. Prepare your coffins.

    • Biondo says:

Mope, can you join Jabber 10 minutes before (say around 21:00), I have to test a different way of starting the server and I’d like to have realtime feedback. Ty.

  11. SAPE says:

    Howdy!
About the demo. We would make a good, fun demo. We would match a time, when play all together, who can connect. Biondo, Mope, Grey and I. What is your opinion?

  12. JesseJames says:

No problem BIondo, take your time for it. It’s better that 5 players can play than nobody.

    • Biondo says:

Thank you Jesse. I’m working on it, but I have no idea about how to solve the problem πŸ™

  13. JesseJames says:

Indeed can’t connect @11: 20. It’ s pity, I would try it. It looks so nice. Maybe anyone can post here screenshots, so I can see how it is to play with low gravity?

    • Biondo says:

Sorry Jesse, I am working on it, but cannot guarantee anything.
When I’ll have time, I’ll post a demo.

  14. Biondo says:

Total fail. I can’t find a way to change settings so that all clan members can connect to low-g “server”. Whenever Sape, Greyman, Mope (the only ones who were able to connect) want to play in low-g, you can ask and I’ll put it online for you. πŸ™

  15. JippiJaYeah says:

    19:10: Doesn’t work for me – can’t connect!

  16. Biondo says:

It’s possible that the connection problems that some of you experienced were caused by a wrong configuration of my router (thanks, TheDoctor).
Those who weren’t able to connect, can now try again. Let me know.

  17. Biondo says:

By popular demand, also today low-g server will be up and running (for those who are able to connect) at the same address. I changed map rotation: tijuana, station, harbor, lake, lago, ghosttown, deadwood, fort, nonamecity, hangemhigh, newtown, alamo_tiny, outpost, steamboat, train.
    Hope everything works.

  18. SAPE says:

Thanx Biondo. These games were a nice and fun experience. You are the best. Good Night.

  19. Biondo says:

This server was just an experiment, something just for fun. Never thought of putting online a new server, 24 hours/7 days, also because my connection is a “home connection”. But now I’m curious to know where the problem originates from. I’ll investigate, maybe I’ll ask to Doc. Sorry for all who tried to connect without success, and thanks to all.

  20. SAPE says:

We can play with Grey. It works.

  21. JesseJames says:

I tested again, and again waited 30 seconds before closing the game. It’s very frustrating that it doesn’t work on my pc.

  22. JippiJaYeah says:

    Do you tried it now?

  23. SAPE says:

    Howdy!
We (Grey and I) tested it, It work great. We use β€œ\connect everything.no-ip.org”.

  24. JippiJaYeah says:

    17:03: I tried “\connect everything.no-ip.org”, but can’t connected.

  25. SAPE says:

I played a match against bots, The server work correctly. Everything is ok Biondo. I use β€œ\connect everything.no-ip.org”

  26. SAPE says:

Biondo, I will visit Grey on 17:00. I try to help him about the connection.

    • Biondo says:

      OK, thank you, Sape.
Also Mope had some problems, because he started downloading some SG .pk3 that he doesn’t have in his installation. I’ll try to remove unnecessary packets.

  27. Biondo says:

Sorry, I can’t explain this strange thing that some are able to connect and some others not. I’ll investigate.

  28. ZaPaTa says:

I tried it when I was in BB. I get a screen connecting and than I waited 40 seconds but I couldn’t connect.
Then I tried it one more time and when I typed it in the console he closed ballerbude and I get the mainmenu. Very strange.
oops it’s Jesse here with ZaPaTa’s account πŸ™‚

  29. Wiskey says:

I get new list and I can’t see your server in list. I do it many times without success. I also tried to open console and type \connect everything.no-ip.org but it only count numbers and nothing happend.

  30. Biondo says:

I don’t really understand why some players can’t connect (Jesse for example).

The server is up, if I update (update, not refresh!) servers list in SG I see it (at the end of the list), I see it in XQF (equivalent of Monster Browser, but for Linux), SNH connects (via Internet, not via LAN), Sape connects, Mope connects.

    Very strange!

For the last time, here are the instructions:

    Name: “You click, you fly!
Address: everything.no-ip.org (be careful, don’t confuse dots and hyphens).

Open SG console and type: “\connect everything.no-ip.org” (without quotes).

Use SG 1.1b4 (not SG 1.0).

  31. Wiskey says:

Biondo, can you tell when you push your server to online? That I can try connecting

  32. Biondo says:

Strange I see it in the list, but you have to scroll down till the end of the list.

    Use this address: everything.no-ip.org
So in console you have to type “\connect everything.no-ip.org”.

This address doesn’t change (of course it works only when the server is up).
I’ll try to keep it up and running this morning, and probably part of the afternoon (also when I don’t play).

  33. SAPE says:

Biondo, I get a new list, but I can’t find it. Could ou give me an IP adress?

    • SAPE says:

Thanx Biondo. It was a very very good experience and a very fun game. I thankful to you. πŸ™‚

  34. SAPE says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tohUNmhqtlo&feature=related

MOHAA multiplayer. The mood of the map is very similar I think. Outpost is work as a MOHAA map.

  35. SAPE says:

    Thanx the recognition.
Outpost… It is a very nice map, and IMO it is a good map. It is a special map, like lake. When I played on it, I had a nostalgic feeling. I feel like play MOHAA. This map remind me to the game I started to play FPS game. I enjoyed it.
Alamo… Not my favourite map, but it was a great and fun game.
    Thanx the game. GG all.
    YEHAAAAAAAAA! πŸ™‚

  36. Biondo says:

    Here are the screenshots:

First map was Outpost. You know that I’m a fan of Outpost (see SG forum), it has the best graphic rendering of all SG maps, this is sure. Steve should open a school for SG mappers. But I wasn’t sure that it was fun to play … it seems that it is, it’s playable, also when you feel lost in a labirinth, you can identify some “aggregation points”.

The second map is in absolute the best SG map (IMO): Alamo, in its second reincarnation Alamo2. Nothing better exists, a complex map that still is simple in its component parts. I know that it’s CPU consuming, I know that your ping is not at its best, but there is nothing better than Alamo.

Nice scores for Jippi (but this is not news). Nice scores for Mope and Zapata (Zapa, you are playing much better lately). But particularly nice scores for Sape! [I told you that Sape had a great future as an SG player].

  37. GREYMAN says:

    Hi!
I just recently returned home boys. It was a very long day. Sorry, i pass this game. I’m tired.
    Come on everyone!
    /Beware from the BEAST!/
Thanks for the message transfer SAPE. πŸ™‚

  38. SAPE says:

    I will be there.

  39. Wiskey says:

I come to clan wars. Every map is suitable.

  40. JesseJames says:

It’s a pity that no one couldn’t join on the server of Biondo. Also my fault. But tnx to make the server, Biondo. Was it fun with SNH?

It’s also a pity that I can’t play today (the dj-contest). Zap is my biggest fan and will watching me this evening. So also no ZaPaTa this evening. But have fun, and let me know the score so I can calculate the new score.

  41. Mope says:

    Count me in!

  42. Biondo says:

Ah yes, because today it’s Thursday.

Same DM in TN, at 21:00. OK? And next TDM in Nargajunas.
For me every map is OK.

  43. SAPE says:

Grey work in evening shift every second weeks. He works to 21:00-22:00 this week.

  44. Wiskey says:

Biondo, I try 22.04 in Finland’s time and I have no lucky.

    • Biondo says:

      Strange. Thank you, Wiskey.
I’ll make some more tests with members that use Jabber, so we can communicate in real time.

  45. Biondo says:

In the end I got nervous for nothing (sorry):

    – Zapata, already said he wasn’t interested
    – Jesse, was wrong about the date (and also he didn’t have time)
    – Mope told me in jabber he couldn’t join
    – Sape tried and tried but with wrong IP address and maybe too early or too late
    – Wiskey tried without success (maybe a misunderstanding about Italian/Finnish times?)
    – Greyman… don’t know, maybe the baby needed his attentions πŸ™‚
    – Jippi, well … you know, Jippi is somehow unpredictable
    – Rems, I never counted on him

At least I was able to play with SNH πŸ™‚

  46. Anonymous says:

The SG server list need at least 24 hours for refreshing, so you don’t see biondo’s server.
    jippi

    • Biondo says:

I don’t think so, Jippi, or at least not in this case. In all my tries during these days, the server got listed after a couple of minutes.

  47. Biondo says:

Hi Wiskey. The server was up and running since 20:50 till 22:00 (Italian time, that means 21:50–23:00 Finnish time).
Did you tried during that time interval?

  48. Wiskey says:

I tried to come server, I refresh SG server list but I didn’t see your server. Maybe I come too late.

  49. SAPE says:

And I mad a Jabber urgently.

  50. SAPE says:

Ok. I used the IP adress that You gave me… πŸ™ Sorry. I had to write it here. It is my fault.
Hence I get a new list one or twice, but I didn’t remember what time I did it. Maybe you didn’t activate the server that time a got new list.

  51. Biondo says:

Thank you, Sape. At least you tried…
It was a depressive experience waiting for more than an hour and seeing no Lame. I constantly checked my e-mail, this blog and Jabber to see if somebody encountered some problems connecting. But I only found a tomb silence.

How did you try to connect?

    1) You used the numeric IP address that I gave you the day before yesterday
    2) You tried to connect to “everything.no-ip.org:27960”
    3) You used SG server browser to get a new list (not only refreshing the list!)

My IP address is not static, it changes every single day (sometimes more than once a day), so the number I gave to you was only valid for that evening.
Options 2 and 3 should work, if not there is still some problem in my “server”.

    Let me know.

    • JippiJaYeah says:

Just ping everything.no-ip.org and you got the ip.

      • Biondo says:

It’s not necessary to get the numeric IP. Just open console and write “\connect everything.no-ip.org” (without quotes. The port is unnecessary since I use the standard SG port). Alternatively use SG visual interface: click “Join”, then “Specify” and write “everything.no-ip.org” (without quotes. And of course without “http://…”). Also be careful to hyphens and dots, don’t confuse them.

  52. SAPE says:

    I tried to connect roughly at 19:30, 20:00, 20:30, 21:05, and some minutes before it. I can’t.
    What was the problem?
Biondo, I see you play now (BB stat) without *LAME* prefix….

  53. JesseJames says:

Was he online today? Had no time to shoot, because a dj-contest tommorow evening, so I can’t play our weekly clanfight πŸ™

  54. Biondo says:

lost a day and lost a night πŸ™

  55. Wiskey says:

    I try this server tonight.

  56. JesseJames says:

Hehe indeed the memories of Urban Terror came back when I see this plan. It was fun for one game. But I will see what it gives in SG. Can you play with a gatling in the sky? πŸ™‚
I will check the server this evening if I have time.
    Great work Biondo!

  57. Biondo says:

For those who want to try, I’ll put the server online tonight around 21:00 and for about 1 hour. You have to reload server list in SG and search for a server with the pink name “You click, You fly!” (a tribute to the now dead “You click, You die!” server). Alternatively also connecting to “everything.no-ip.org:27960” should work. Use SG 1.1.b4.
At the moment, maps cycle doesn’t work, so you can’t change map and you get disconnected at the end of the game.
    Expect a high ping.

  58. SAPE says:

Thanx Biondo. It was a nice experience. Yesterday evening I waited an important phone call. It was the reason I had to go.

  59. ZaPaTa says:

JJ and I used to play another online shooter game for a short time. There was also a ‘jump’ server, it was fun for a while or as you say every now and then. But what i love about SG is the reality in guns, reloading, noise, etc…So I’m more a fan of a very high reality in-game. So if we would play our weekly game there, I would be nice if we could switch settings for one game or so.
Priority to me seems to have or own server, a regular nice own spot without specials like low-gravity. Once we get there we can check for variables in-game ( i’m sure gravity is just one of them).

    • Biondo says:

To have a *LAME* server would be cool, but until now we haven’t found a viable solution. Jippi’s server had high ping, and mine is also worst.
Also I never thought of putting online a 24/7 server, but a server for just half an hour a week to have some “unconventional” fun.

Jippi, in the meanwhile I solved my problem with “dedicated server”: when I wanted to join the game, I mistakenly tried to connect to the public IP address instead of the private one (or instead of using Local in game browser).

  60. SAPE says:

Good idea. I support it. It help to improve your accuracy I think.
